We're here to spotlight the incredible photographers and creatives in our midst. They're the ones with the jaw-dropping stories and the secret sauce that keeps them pushing the boundaries in this ever-changing, always-fascinating world of photography.
So, get ready to be wowed and inspired!
For Meet-Up #12, we are bringing a photographer all the way from the Netherlands, a gentleman called Martin Roemers.
We can say that Martin is the maestro capable of turning global themes into captivating photographic tales! He's been dancing to the beat of his camera's shutter for over three decades, and his portfolio's got the moves to prove it!
Martin's go-to groove is the black-and-white portrait. He's all about the long-term effects of warfare, and it shows in his killer books and exhibitions like "Kabul," "The Never-Ending War," and "The Eyes of War". He dives deep into the minds of soldiers and war survivors, using his lens not just to see but to hear their stories.
For his "Relics of the Cold War", Martin goes all Indiana Jones, tracing the remnants of the Cold War across Eastern and Western Europe and photographing them right where they stand. Think underground tunnels, rusty tanks, and abandoned nuclear missile launchers – it's like urban archaeology, but with a funky Cold War twist! These relics might be battered by time, erosion, and neglect, but they're still jammin' in his book, reminding us of the not-so-distant past.
Next up, "Metropolis." This one's a wild ride through megacities like Shanghai and New York. Martin asked himself, "How do you capture the insane energy of a ten-million-strong city in a single snap?" Well, he set his sights on bustling marketplaces and main roads, took a slightly elevated stance, and worked some slow shutter speed magic. The result? An electrifying dance of people, trains, cars, rickshaws, and cyclists, all against a backdrop of static elements like houses, stalls, and merchandise. It's like a high-energy jam session, and his photos are the ultimate groove!
And let's not forget the awards – Martin's got two shiny World Press Photo prizes and a heap of other international awards and nominations.
After graduating from the AKI Academy of Fine Arts, Martin put down roots in Delft, the Netherlands. His main gigs have hit the solo and group stage all over – Europe, Asia, Australia, the Americas, you name it! His works have found forever homes in collections worldwide, from Amsterdam's Rijksmuseum to the Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles.

Martin Roemers established himself as a conceptual photographer after an award-winning career in documentary photojournalism. He works on long-term projects centred on the human dimension of profound societal changes. His main concerns relate to conurbation, mass mobility and life under siege. Using custom-tailored photographic approaches, Roemers’s visually arresting renderings of his subject create an opening for personal reflection and interpretation. Roemers has published multiple books, and his widely exhibited work resides in various major collections of museums, institutions and private collectors worldwide.
